MONTEGO BAY, St. James (June 8, 2017): Students of Mount Alvernia Preparatory School were in high spirits after defeating Springfield Primary, in the annual Disaster Education Awareness Programme’s Quiz Competition on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre.
The competition, which commenced on May 26, 2017, to June 6, 2017, saw a total of eighteen participating schools. During the finals, the Mt. Alvernia Preparatory team upset Springfield Primary for the top position. Chetwood Memorial Primary School was also victorious over the Lottery Primary School and secured third place.

Now in its tenth year, the annual Disaster Education Awareness Programme focused on the quiz and poster competitions.
The poster competition – split into three groups – was categorized by age. For the nine to twelve age group, Natajia Newton of Lottery Primary School was placed first, with Robertha Blake and Jaheim Ruddock, both of Garlands Primary School, securing second and third places respectively.
Danielle Mason of Irwin High School won first place for the 13-16 age group, while Pauleka Jones of Herbert Morrison Technical High School and Reanna Dillon, also of Irwin High School, got second and third places for their posters.
Tiasha Reid of Herbert Morrison Technical High School will be awarded for the ‘best poster’ as she submitted two pieces that won both first and second places for the over-16 age group. Chester Anderson of Maldon High School was placed third in this group.
The awards ceremony for the competition’s participants and winners will be held at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre on Friday, June 16, 2017.
