TEF Supports Municipal Corporation’s Sidewalk Rehabilitation Programme

MONTEGO BAY, St. James (August 28, 2017):  The St. James Municipal Corporation has embarked upon a sidewalk rehabilitation programme that has received major funding from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).

The programme is aimed at improving sidewalks and drainage systems along a number of streets throughout downtown Montego Bay.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Homer Davis, and Chairman of the TEF, Mr. Godfrey Dyer, toured sections of Montego Bay on Monday, August 21, to observe works that were being carried out, particularly along Harbour Street, at the rear of the Parish Library.

According to Mayor Davis, the tour was carried out to provide the Chairman of the TEF a firsthand view of the programme’s progress.

“The tour was necessary for Mr. Dyer and I to get a firsthand view of the advancement made under the programme thus far. The TEF is fully on board, and as a result, it was pertinent that we invite the chairman to come along and view aspects of the work being done,” said Mayor Davis.

During the tour, Mr. Dyer expressed his desire to see the city improved, and stated that the TEF is willing to support any serious effort that will help to upgrade downtown Montego Bay.
“The walk this morning was really for me to see where they have reached with it (programme) and I am certainly impressed with what is being done. If the Mayor continues along this trend, I can see us working with him much more to get Montego Bay where it needs to be, especially considering the fact that Montego Bay is a resort town,”  said Dyer.

Also participating in the tour were Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Leroy Williams and Superintendent of Roads and Works (Acting), Saad Campbell.
The sidewalk rehabilitation programme commenced along Union Street, Montego Bay in February of this year. The programme’s scope includes sidewalk construction and rehabilitation, drainage rehabilitation, and the development and repair of restricted handrails, guardrails and bollards.

Works have already commenced along McKatty Street, Cottage Road, Lawrence Lane and Harbour Street, in the vicinity of the parish library car-park.
